Default Height Requirements for a No U-Turns Sign

My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: California.

I recieved a no u turn ticket. I was in the left turn signal lane with a truck in front of me so I could not see the no u-tun sign while waiting for the light to turn green. when the light did turn green and the truck in front of me made the left I could see the green arrow light across the street but could not see the "no u-turn" sign because the sign was only about 5 feet off the ground and oncoming traffic, making there left turns where blocking the sign. Because at the time I looked for the "NO U TURN" sign a car was blocking the sign I think I should be able to fight this.

Anyone know what the height requirements are for the "NO U TURN" sign are? they should be something higher than the average height of a car.

    Thanks

A sign on the opposing median should have a mounting height of 7 feet from the top of the traveled way (the asphalt, not the concrete median). If there is an additional sign on the median (i.e. a sign that says "One Way" w/ an arrow), it could be posted at 6 feet from the top of the traveled way. (See CA MUTCD 2010 Section 2A.18)

It's interesting that there wasn't a No U-turn sign posted on the traffic signal mast arm near the left-turn vehicle head (the green arrow) since that's the ideal place to put it since a driver would be looking at the signal head before making the turn.

If there really is only one No U-turn sign on the far median, take a passenger with you and go back and make that same left-turn. Have the passenger take a photo of the No U-turn sign while it is obstructed by the opposing left-turns.

Thank you for the information. this will be very helpfull. I did take pictures and submitted them to the court. The Judge still found me guilty so I am appealing the decision.

    thanks

Did you ask the officer if this was the sign? Then you can ask him to estimate the height .. (if you are in the picture & its 5 ft from the pavement then he should be able to be hounded to answer)...then when the state rests ask for a motion to acquit based on the fact that the signage does not meet the regulatory requirements for a mandatory sign.

Most judges will listen to a defendant bringing this information to the courts attention and rule appropriately but some want the officer to agree that it is the sign in question.

Good luck on your de novo hearing. Some judges really should not be judges if they do not want to rule according to the law.
