Is it illegal for a US citizen to obtain 2 US passports?
Yes, it is quite possible for a number of reasons.
First those who travel on government business will often have a different passport for that in addition to their regular one.
In addition, you can get duplicate passports which is handy if you are travelling between countries that are not friendly to each other. You don't have to show the one with the visa stamps from the other. It behooves you to always show the same one each time you deal with a given country however.
it was a query that came up on a blog, the conversation was regarding some DHS bill in congress currently, and part of that bill was to make it illegal for a US citizen to have more than one US passport, the blogger was suggesting or implying that IF, you wanted to get a duplicate passport, you'd better do it now, you won't be able to in the future.....it'd seem to me though if a duplicate PP was issued there'd be a record and thus one could be voided/cancelled through the individual PP number
