My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: New York.
I got the same call twice - "private" showed up on caller ID so I didn't answer it. It listened to my voice mail.
Two different people - they gave their names, but neither gave the name of the company they were calling from or what company they are representing. One sounded friendly and the other a bit ominous.
This is the message (not verbatim, but close): I have been trying to reach you for the past several days at your home and your place of business, because I have some documents for your signature. Please be available tomorrow between the hours of 12 and 5. If you wish to contact this office the number is _____ and the file number is ___. If you call and resolve this matter, let them know to give me a stop order. See you tomorrow.
If they are really calling me at my place of business (if they have that number) they won't be finding me there because I work at home and the actual office is in another state.
I actually did not get any calls from them or any other agency in the past few days as they claim.
The question is: Is this just a collection tactic or can I really expect someone to drop by tomorrow with "documents?" Is so-and-so from this company even allowed to do this? Or are they talking about a summons to appear in court? I googled the phone number they left on the message but I did not get any information about what company it is for.
I have heard similar things in the past - such as "there is a matter coming up soon in NY and I just want to give you the heads up"... they mention the court and the police. They say they are calling from a law office but you know it is actually a debt collector.
