Default Incorrect Answer Given at Naturalization Interview

I am in need of an expert advice.

I applied for my naturalization in Jan 2011 and had my interview (May 17) and passed my civil test. While the officer was going through the questions on my N-400 application she asked if "I have ever registered to vote” and I said no.

Here is the story, I completely forgot (I know this may sound like a lie) that I registered in Feb 2008. I got the voters card but I can’t even find it and I never voted. Now, I forgot about this fact when I completed my application and only remembered when she asked the question - I went like this. "I think I registered and she said you registered? I said I did something in the DMV at this stage she had a weird look on her face and I quickly said hmmm, maybe not and she checked the boxed (I had ‘No’ checked anyway).

So, I applied for a name change too and was told I will hear back from them when a decision is made. I rushed back home first to look for d voter’s card and decided to look my name up online. It came up as "registered". My heart sunk

What do I do now? I have spent my entire day brooding about what the outcome will be as I clearly know there is no honest mistake in America. Should I call INS? Should I get a lawyer involved? I read on a couple of forums today that many who were as ignorant as I was went and canceled their voter’s registration. But I have completed my interview and was under oath! Help please…….Thanks!

I think it would be a very good idea to work with an immigration lawyer.

In some states, non-citizens can vote in certain local elections; are you in such a state?

I doubt you can cancel your registration at the DMV. The MotorVotor bill only requires the DMV to take registrations applications. To do any other change on your registration you need to contact the city/county registration office you can find it here: https://www.voterinfo.sbe.virginia.g...licLookup.aspx

Virginia does *NOT* allow non-US citizens to vote. You lied on your application.

Thanks for all your responses. Update - I have met with two different lawyers to discuss my issue...I was advised to cancel my registration which I did. One of lawyers said it may be appropriate to wait for a response from the Immigration officer before doing anything else. I rested on that until last week when I went back to another and told him I will like to report myself rather than wait for the IO to get back to me. The voter registration office sent me a cancellation notice but no evidence that I actually never voted so the lawyer called them to verify that piece of info and requested for a letter to be sent to me so I am now patiently waiting for the mail. I will provide more updates as I process so it can help someone else.....
