My wife and I are planning and going through a divorce. We would like to be civil as possible. I already have a lawyer, whom I have already talked with. And I do have the name of a good mediator.
We have a house, no debt (except the house), no children, no shared health insurance, we each have a 401k and a shared bank account.
So I have some questions around the divorce. If we wanted to try and do as much of it (or all of it) ourselves, how difficult would that be? Even if we use a lawyer, we plan on writing down what each other wants/doesn't want before we go to him just to save money. The house I know I would owe her the equity on.
Once, or before the divorce goes through, can I call up the bank and take her off the mortgage? With everything else, 401k, bank account and splitting up our stuff, can we just do that ourselves? How hard would the paperwork be to fill out ourselves?
Again, this is based on that we are civil and want this to be as quick, painless and cheap as possible.
