Sorry if this is in the wrong subsection.
I've just finished reading the book 'Plain Truth' by Jodi Picoult and at the back of the book is a discussion question that asks:
"Does the American legal system have the right to govern a group separate from American society?"
(The book is about a murder that occurs within the Amish community)
Right now, they can govern another community separate from their own but I think it is wrong.
I don't think they have the right to govern a group that lives separate from their society - they choose to live differently from the American ways and so the legal system shouldn't have any power over them (Unless the crime isn't within the separated community).
In the book, the legal system takes over, but I think that is wrong of the legal system to do so. They should have let the people in the separate society to deal with it.
I guess since they live on American soil they have to obey their laws, but the consequences shouldn't be made by the court of law.
What do you think?
