My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Jersey
I'm 18 and have had no previous violations or fines. Me, two underage friends, and a friend over the age of 21 had been watched leaving a liquor store. My friend over 21 had purchased four bottles of alcohol. We were pulled over and searched. I was arrested and so was he. I was charged with possession of all four bottles of alcohol. The extent of my actual possession that I know happened consisted of me carrying one bag that contained one bottle for my friend while he adjusted his pockets and we crossed the street at the same time to reach the car that was at the corner. I had sat in the back passenger seats with him. After giving back the bags, the bottles were placed on his side, while another was placed in the pocket of the seat in front of me as his was occupied. I was the only minor charged among my friends and my friend over 21 was charged for purchasing for minors. The bottles were unopened, and remained in the bags when the police searched the car and found them. No one had been drinking and I was not driving.
My questions are: What can I expect for charges and fines? Will this remain on my record? What can I say or plead as in order to receive only fines?
I cannot obtain a lawyer, thus I am seeking as much advice and knowledge as I can from anyone and anywhere. Thanks
