My question involves criminal law for the state of: Rhode Island
Hello.
I recently shoplifted for the first time ever in my life as a college student at age 22. I will not blame anybody but myself. I was in the wrong group of people that led me to make this unfortunate choice. I shoplifted a dress from JCPenny which the cost of it was $50. I was taken to an office, which is where the security/police has been called down to. They took down my information and then I just waited for an officer to arrive. They can hold you up to an hour in a room and if an officer does not show up, they just let you go, which what took place. They told me that they will have the police department call me the next day, Friday, and give me information if any charges will take place. My record is completely clear never did I get involved in any type of trouble. They told me that it will be out of JCPenny hands of what the outcome will be and it is all to the police department.
I never received a phone call the next day, which I am worried. I do not know if I should trying calling the police department and asking them if there have been anything filed on me. Also, I signed papers in the office and one of them was a Civil Demand Notice which I noticed they took down the wrong address. I don’t know if I should try calling the JCPenny department and speaking to a manager stating what happened and apologizing or act like a grown up and actually go to the store and speak face to face, which would be the right thing to do.
If anybody could help me it would be much appreciated of what are my charges and outcome of this whole situation.
Thank you for the help.
