Default Changing a Child's Name Without Notice To The Father

Hello,I live in WA state.I have son who is from my ex boyfriend.we were never married. He hated the fact that I had child,he and I broke up after few years. I took son and left. we never went to the court to get any order for custody or anything. but he is very violent person and has thereaten me with letters and e mails, telling me not to come around his family anymore.I know I should have gone to court but I am very scare to contact him and let him know where I am at.But i and my husband really would love to change his last name to his so we can be a big one happay family. We don't want him to feel left out since his sister and brother all has same last name.
What can we do? Can we change his last name without contacting his biological father? Please give me a advice!

It's unlikely that you can change the child's name without giving the father legal notice, but a local lawyer may be able to come up with a way to keep your address off of the notice. That would not stop the father from trying to seek visitation or other relief through the court.
