My question involves real estate located in the State of: NJ
This attorneys office was helping us on a purchase but we later decided to terminate the contract due to the land dispute between the sellers and one of their neighbors. Originally we had an agreement with the lawyer that if the deal closed the rate would be a flat $xxx but they considered our decision of walking away was out of the scope of their service. We agreed to pay extra for that part.
We now have the bill. The *extra* part turns out to be more than four grand - a lot higher than we had expected.
We did not have a written attorney fee agreement for that part, and we were satisfied with the *extra* service rendered by another lawyer of their office. However, we still want to have a clearer idea how they are charging us this much.
Please advise how we should raise our concerns properly. We hope we don't need to offend the lawyers since the lawyer who helped us get out of the deal was nice and responsive. And they are holding our earnest money returned by the sellers.
