Default Mail Stolen by Another Tenant, Mailboxes Have No Locks

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of:texas. i moved into a largr efficiency w 5 other tenants. landlord put new unlockable mailboxes for us. my medications were stolen. filed police report landlord has done Nothing. so i bought a drill and mail slot and installed it on my door. can i charge her for the cost of all this? cost me 73.00 and time running frantically around having meds sent again. Im a Veteran they cost me nothing. since they were taken ive paid out over $100.00 to have something in the interum. what are rights? im furious on the whole mess.
    thanks! shannon in Paris TX

You have no right to install a lock without your landlord's consent, let alone to try to charge your landlord for the materials. Your landlord would, in fact, be able to tell you to remove the lock and restore the mailbox to its prior condition, or pay for that repair.

Further, the post office has very specific rules for locks on mailboxes. You might find that you aren't receiving ANY mail in the future.

Did OP mention a lock prior to editing? I only see reference to a mail slot.

What happens if the mail slot isn't big enough to accommodate your meds, or some other piece of mail? Where is your door in relation to the mailboxes? You may find the mail person has no duty, or interest, in trudging to your door when you have a perfectly good mailbox where everyone else does.
