Default Store Won't Repair Defective Electronic Device

My question involves an injury that occurred in the state of: PA

I have a samsung r780. the other day both shift keys and the caps lock buttons stopped working. for about a minute they were working on and off and then all of a sudden all three buttons quit working.

here are some things i have figured out...

    - removed keyboard from laptop, there was nothing interfering with the connection of the keyboard to the keyboard controller. placed keyboard back in laptop.

    - i didn't have a usb keyboard handy to test, so i had someone remote connect to my computer. they were able to use their shift keys and caps lock key to perform those functions on my computer. which shows that it is not a windows or bios problem... i think.

    - i downloaded 'keyboard test.' the test is not even recognizing that these keys are being pressed. it doesn't even say 'key failure'

    - i reprogrammed a key on my keyboard and made it function as the left shift key. it worked. i reprogrammed the left shift key to function as a working key... that didn't work.

so these three keys just died simultaneously within a minute. there is nothing physically wrong with the keys that i can tell. nothing was spilled on my keyboard. there is nothing under the keys... very clean keyboard.

they all perform the same function pretty much. so it isn't like 3 random keys going bad on my computer.

now, my question... is it the keyboard itself that is faulty or is it the keyboard controller on the motherboard...

just want to know that the store wont replace any keyboard. do i have to file a complaint to court about the store?

    thanks,

    Phillip

It's not unusual for retailers to say, "We don't provide manufacturer's warranty repairs here - contact the manufacturer." So... is the computer under warranty and, if so, what did the manufacturer tell you when you called about getting the keyboard repaired?

    Wouldn't that void your warranty???

What store did you buy it at, and how long ago did you buy it??

I just purchased two laptops and a desktop this past month, planning to buy another one and "service and support" is on the top of my list. I bought the desktop at Costco's and they have a 90 day "return with no questions asked" policy if anytning goes wrong with TV's and computer equipment. The HP computer also comes with a 2 year HP/Costco phone/mail support if anything goes wrong, so you can have it repaired that way.

Of the two laptops, one I got at "Best Buy", one at Costco. I already returned one laptop at Costco, under the 90 day retiurn policy, and got another new one. At Best Buy, they have a 14 dey "return if it doesn't work" guaranty, and after that. it's a only limited warranty from the manufacturer, also HP. I'm told after 14 days, don't bother the store unless you have a service contract. I owned Compaq/HP's through the years, and if you dont mind talking to support in India, or speak fluent Indian, it's OK. You can also get e-mail support, but hardware is another issue. We decided to go for the $99.00 service contract for one year where I can bring it back to the store, a 15 minute drive, speak English, and have it repaired by the Geek Squad" for any reason, and if they can't fix it, there's no BS, they'll give you a new one. So they say.

I think of it this way, I used to pay $850 to get a laptop that suits all my needs. Today I can get one for $599 that suits me fine, so for another $99.00, I'm all covered for repairs as well, and still ahead of the game.

We would be getting yet another laptop, we're replacing everything, and to spread our options, we saw some good deals at Staples, and if we go that route, we'll be getting a service contract there as well, and they have technicians on staff called "Easy Tech", and they even offer home service.

I don't know about you, but I decided that most retail stores do not have the wherewithal to handle sophisticated computer repairs, and I tried service centers in India, and I'm not impressed, though I had minor problems fixed. I experienced a similar keyboard problem you described, but it was with a desktop, so I just substituted another keyboard I had, and the problem was fixed. It appears when I hit the "numlock" key, it affects the behavoiur of other keys. Before Staples had "Easy Tech", you get a blank stare if you go back with problems on your PC or laptop, but now, I don't mind paying extra so I don't have to hear any BS when something goes wrong. And better yet, it's a short walk from my house.

You have to ask and know eactly what the store's policies are before agreeing to buy it, and don't base your decision entirely on the price of the hardware itself. Some of the same laptops are advertised cheaper at Radio Shack, but what do I do if something goes wrong?? For instance, there is no one at Costco's that I see who knows how to fix computers, so I can see the 90 day return working well with them, and two years at their service center, so at least they have a solutuion. Everyone busy on the floor at Costco's seems to be busy preparing and handing out free sample food.
