    Default Destroyed Mail

I used to work for a small "hometown" bank and on 4/14/05 I was asked to bring the mail to the USPS. I left work 10 min early for the USPS but couldn't find it so I went home. When I got home I asked my hubby where was it he explained and I sat on the couch and thought, oh I will do it later. Well I didn't.. The next day I remembered on my way to work that I still had to do it. But I thought oh I will on my lunch. Well to my suprise at 9:15am that day they fired me saying, just not a good fit and they do not plan to have a receptionist any longer. So I left and completely forgot about the mail for weeks. Well after about 2-3 weeks Iwas up at my in-laws cabin and we were spring cleaning and had a burning pit going so I threw all the mail in it. Now on 5/23/05 I was called by the Sheriff to come in and talk to him but he wouldn''t tell me why. So I went. When I got there I intially said I brought it to the USPS later in the day. He countered w/ we have tape and don't see you or your car. So I fessed up and told the entire truth. Because he said he could help me if I told him. The bank wants their mail back and if they could get it back they would not press charges. But since I don't have it they can't get it back and they want to press charges. So anyway about 4 hours later the same sherriff came to my house with a search warrant and took my safe deposit box key and the mail bin that I told him I still had. It was plastic so I could not burn it too. The cops won't tell me what kind of charges I am looking at. I have never been in trouble for anything before EVER. And it was simply a stupid move. WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT? WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Default Possible Criminal Charges for Destroying Mail

It is difficult to speculate on what charges they may bring - it will depend in part upon what you destroyed, and its value.

You would be well-served by consulting with a criminal defense lawyer in the jurisdiction where this occurred.

    Default Destroyed Mail

In the search warrant they claimed that tax forms, payroll check stubs and other misc mail. I didn't really pay attention to the content but I do know that those things were not in there. I know what they look like, pink mailing labels for taxes and green envelopes for payroll. What should I do. I don;t have $$ for an atty.
