My question involves criminal law for the state of: Virginia
I'm 17, I live in Virginia Beach and recently I was caught on a marijuana and curfew charge. I was pulled over in a neighborhood and a cop rolled up. He searched my car and found a few empty bags, a pill bottle with some stems, and a bowl with ash and resin in it. I was calm and cooperative and admitted ownership of these items. the cop followed me home and talked to my parents but I never got a ticket/citation nor did I see or sign any paperwork, and neither did my parents. Also I'll be 18 in 2 months. I have a clean record thus far and I recently started under psychiatric care again, which I was told would help my case in showing that I am recieving help already for mental health problems, typically a cause of "self-medication" with drugs.
My questions are:
1) Shouldn't I have received some kind of paper or something? It doesn't seem right to me that I didn't. But he said "you are being charged with...."
2) I'm aware of the max punishment, a $500 fine and 30 days in jail and mandatory 6 month license suspension. I know this is most likely not what will happen, so what probably will happen?
3) Should I get an attorney for such a small case? Is it worth the hassle?
