Post Emancipation of a 16 Year Old in the State of Georgia

My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Georgia

I am sixteen years old and will be seventeen in October. I was wondering what it would take for me to get emancipated. I plan on dropping out of school this year and getting my GED. I have put in applications for many jobs. I have a place I can stay and would be paying rent. My parents and I haven't gotten along for years. The situation at home is not good at all. My dad is unemployed and my mom is 100% disabled. I was recently sent to live with my sister to get a better education but was brought back. We don't get along at all and I would like to know what to do to get emancipated. Thanks.

Start by reading the stickies for the emancipation section, so you'll know exactly what emancipation IS.

The moment you say the words "plan on dropping out of school", you can realistically kiss any possibility of emancipation goodbye.

"Applied for many jobs" isn't much better.

Here's what you need to do to get emancipated (and I am not kidding - Georgia has recently tightened up its laws so that it is next to impossible for a minor to be emancipated).

1.) WITH your parents' permission, move out of the house.
2.) Find a job that will enable you to pay 100% of your rent (market rate - not a token paid for living in your best friend's, grandmother's, or girlfriend's guest room); food; clothes; utilities; transportation; medical care; insurance; staples; school fees and supplies; all other incidentals
3.) Take and work at that job until you have a strong history of supporting yourself and can show the judge exactly how you have done it. This means having a budget showing, "I earn xxx.xx per week of which xx.xx goes to rent, xx.xx goes to food, xx.xx to utilities...etc." and the appropriate receipts to prove that you're really doing it and not just showing your class project from Consumer Ed.
4.) STAY IN SCHOOL. Aardvarc wasn't kidding either. You'll just have to earn all the money in #2 outside of school hours. And be ready to show the judge a current report card with better than average grades.

When you can prove all of the above, then maybe, just maybe, if the judge is in a really good mood that day, he might not throw your petition out of court. And if he stays in a good mood for the rest of the week, you'll have about a 1% chance that he'll grant it. But don't even try until you can prove 1, 2, 3 AND 4 to the judge's satisfaction - and he will not be easily satisfied.

Sound impossible? Good, then you're starting to get the idea.

So there is basically no way I can get out at 17? I was told and I also read that at 17 if you leave your parents may call the cops but he cops technically can't force you to come back, is that true?

Let me start by saying I live in Georgia.

That "I can move out at 17" crap is what your friends told you, right? 17 is NOT 18 light... you will still be dragged back home like the child you are. by the police. Everytime.

Let me make sure I understand you. Since you are not a candidate for emancipation in the slightest, you think that you can run away and no one will care? It doesn't work like that.
