Smile Abandonment of Green Card - by Person or Post

Hi. I am married to an American citizen and achieved my green card in mid- 2007 so he could work in Tennessee for a couple of years. We returned to Australia permanently in December, 2009. I took my 18 year old back there to visit with our good friends in late March, and I was taken aside by officers who advised me to either get a reentry visa quick smart or abandon my green card back home. We are not thinking of working in the States in the next 10 years, so I found some reference to an I - 407 form and downloaded it.

I was told by the officer at LAX I would have to hand in the card in person in another capital city- is this true or can I send it and the card by mail? If I do take the plane trip for the consulate do I need the I - 407 in hand? I tried getting an appointment like the airport officer said this evening and it redirected me- I cannot seem to keep on the Infopass site, which is frustrating.

    Thanks for your help.

The general advice is to surrender your card in person at an embassy or consulate along with the completed form I-407.
