My question involves independent contractors in the state of: Iowa
The college I work for does contracted training with businesses in our area. I have recently started doing training for them and recently thought about doing the training as a independent contractor instead of an employee of the college. I only wanted to do this to capitalize on some of the benefits of owning a small business (vehicle and home-office write-offs, etc.).
I was told that I could not do this training (not part of my everyday job - optional) as an independent contractor because I am employed by the college and the government was cracking down on companies use of independent contractors. Is there any merit to this or should I somehow be able to do this extra training as an independent contractor?
Any advice would be appreciated.
