Unhappy Amount in Civil Demand Letter Seems High

My question involves criminal law for the state of: new york.

so me and my friend got caught shoplifting (our items were $20 EACH) but the security guard put our items together (cause he thought we helped each other steal) so the amount was $40. he told us that we ONLY have to pay $40, but i got the letter telling me to pay $198.72.......? we even called target corp. and the lady that picked up looked up our case and said we only have to pay $40 too! what do i do?

My first thought is that if they are not pressing charges against either of you, then you got off incredibly easy regardless of whether you pay $40 or $200.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

The minimum/maximum amount for a Civil Demand is actually set by your state.
