Default Verifying Information from Prior Employer

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Maryland

Are their any rules, guidelines in which a former employer should follow when answering questions regarding a former employee? I was terminated from a job a few years ago, and when a potential employer called to verify...my former boss went into a half hour rant about my performance. I do not lie on my applications nor do I lie when being interviewed, however, this former employer was totally untruthful regarding my former employment there.

I was employed with him for 5 years, my last year there went down hill due to some personal issues I had. In that year, I missed alot of time and my performance went from excellent to fair. He stated that those problems existed for my entire 5 years. That was definately NOT true.

An employer may provide any information that is true, that they honestly believe is true, or that represents their honest and supportable opinion. There are no laws or regulations regarding his being polite or professional when he does so.

Thanks...just thought there was a "protocol" like..what dates of employment, salary, and if terminated, quit, etc. Hey, you get what you get, when you do what you do. I accept personal responsibility.

That is widely believed; that employers can only verify limited information, but it is not true. Sorry.
