My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: VA
I’m trying to get out of my lease, but my landlord is not allowing it with the threat to sue for the automatic renewal year period. I signed a joint lease that automatically renews for a year. The language to terminate it states it can be terminated by "either lessee or lessor by written notice" 60 days before the end of the lease. I sent an email to my leasing agent saying I was going to terminate my lease at the end of the term well before the 60 days, he responded (so I know he got it constituting notice in VA) the same day I sent the email. Now, a month later, he tells me he didn’t get notice from both renters, and my notice is worthless. He never took steps to contact my roommate to see about a new lease after I gave notice, or even give us a notice saying our lease would renew to see if we wanted to continue it. At the end of a lease, can it auto renew against my objection if I followed the proper lease terms to terminate it?
