My question involves criminal law for the state of: NC
Back in Sept 2010 I was caught concealing merchandise in a major department store to the sum of 200 plus dollars. I immediately hired a lawyer and was given 25 hours of community service. Before the case could be dismissed, I was caught shoplifting from another department store for around 40 dollars. Following my lawyers advice I completed 75 hours of additional community service and I sought counseling. I am currently being treated for depression, anxiety, and impulsive actions that led to shoplifting. Thankfully, both cases were dismissed last week and I am eligible for expungement. My lawyer charged 350 dollars for each case and 400 for the expungement. I was fortunate that my cases were dismissed and I have honestly learned my lesson. Take it from me, it is not worth it. The last 6 months of my life have been a nightmare and I am looking forward to putting this behind me.
I have yet to receive any civil demands, but know this could take months. I had no court fees and I am thankful for that as well. This has already cost me enough, and money is the least of my concerns. I hope others can learn from my situation and wish them the best. Remember it is never worth it!
I just wanted to add that both times I was given a citation and never formally arrested. However, I was still arrested regardless of no fingerprints or mugshots being taken and it will be on my record until it is expunged.
