    Default Courtesy Notice

My question involves a speeding ticket from the State of: California

I just want to get this whole ordeal over with and I want to pay right now but I can't do that or check online without a case number.. Do I really have to wait for a courtesy notice that isn't even guaranteed will come? Can I just pick it up somewhere.. or just pay right now? And I want to take traffic school before my court date comes along and before we get billed with a higher insurance rate.

Your citation number (usually on the top right corner of your citation (in red letters and numbers)) should allow you to look up your citation online... or you can use that same number to look up info over the phone (by calling the court number shown at the bottom of your citation).

You should also be able to use your date of birth and your driver's license number to do the same (either online or over the phone).

So, no, you don't need to have your courtesy letter to pay the fine. If for some reason you do a search and nothing comes up, that might mean that the citation has not been filed with the court and you'll have to wait until it is entered into the system. Typically, it takes a minimum of 3 weeks or so before it is filed... Sometimes longer.

Oh.. I was just thinking of going to the court and just paying my fine right now then since I dont need a courtesy notice.. But you mentioned something about it not being in the system.. would I have to wait until it is? I can't just show up in court then and ask for the details? I've tried entering any number as the case number that was on the ticket but nothing is showing up. Also I wanted to ask if the insurance rates going up have already applied .. or will I have time to do traffic school before any of that stuff is altered.

If you've searched online or over the phone and nothing is coming up then the citation is likely not in the system, so going to court now is not going to do you any good.

You WILL have time to complete traffic school before it is reported to the DMV.

okay thank you so much for your help..
Now I just gotta figure out if the citation is in the system. Im not even sure if the case number is on my ticket so that's why I can't search online.. there are a set of 6 numbers on the top right corner with a red Y a little to the left of that.. but I don't know it looks like that could just be the ticket form number or something.. because the field next to where my name is written that says "case no." is left blank by the officer. I guess I can just call in next week and ask..

Again, the number in red on the top right corner of the citation *IS* the citation number which is ALSO the case number... which you can use to look up information either online or over the phone.

This is a speeding ticket which means it is an "infraction, which also means that the citation number is the case number. The only time a different number is assigned to the case is when it is a misdemeanor which would be filed in criminal court, not in traffic court.

okay.. sorry it just confused me. Only the Y is in red. then theres like a small gap between the red Y and the black numbers. but I'm guessing that doesn't matter and all seven is the case number. I appreciate the help, unfortunate that I have to deal with this but I am learning so much ^_^ thanks and sorry for bugging you haha

No apology needed. Different law enforcement agencies (CHP/Sheriff/Police Dept/Transit) use different combination letters/numbers for traffic citations. Regardless, the letter/number combinations can (obviously) be easily entered when you're using the online search feature. Alternatively, if you're using the phone to look it up, the system will prompt you to enter (dial) a specific number for specific letters.
