Default Becoming a Firefighter with a Felony Record

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Arizona
Here is my question, Can i become a firefighter in the state of Arizona with a felony record? cause i know that when i was in prison, they provided firefighter training for both wildland and structural firefighting. i am currently enrolled at a community college to take the firefighter training, am i wasting my time and money? and why would they train inmates and certify them if they cannot pursue it as a career?

This will depend on the jurisdiction in which you'd like to be a firefighter.

A criminal record does not necessarily preclude you from becoming a firefighter. Typically, your record is evaluated on a case by case basis. Your best course of action is to inquire of the jurisdiction in which you would like to work as to the qualifications, and what sort of criminal record might disqualify you.

Are we talking about two felony's? If so, your chances are even lower then having just one.

5? Don't get your hopes up. I hope I'm not coming off wrong or sounding like a jerk, but it's extremely hard for a person with one felony to find a job.
It's really, really difficult for a two time felon to find a job, but a guy with multiple felony's is almost unheard of, especially in a public servant job. I don't think you'll even find a job with a volunteer fire department.

    Good luck tring thou

Go over to FIREHOUSE.COM and read the forums there on getting department jobs. You'll find that in most places in the country these jobs are extremely competitive. You'll need to get the chance to take the exam, score well enough to make the next cut, take a arduous physical ability test, and pass an indepth interview. Even if you fly through these, you're name goes on a "list" in most places that may be years before they think of calling you back to see if you still want the job. Felonies will not help your position on the LIST for sure.

Anyway those boards are populated by existing members of the various departments that can tell you what they think your possibility is.

When they do the background check & if it picks up 5 felonies, it's doubtful (even though they were over 5 years ago) that your application will go to the top of the stack.
