Default Friend's Tool Stolen from My Garage

My question involves personal property located in the State of: Utah

My friend stored his rototiller in my garage over the winter. Garage was broken into, tiller stolen. Filed a police report but without the serial number on tool, fat chance. Not covered by homeowner's. Am I legally responsible for replacement?

You were storing the item for free, as a favor to him? Then probably not. Can you share some context?

We used the tiller in my backyard. With considerable more space, we decided together that the tool could be stored in my garage so that he would have space in his garage for other projects. 3 months later the break in occurred. Friend did not have any serial number / paperwork so the police were unable to search area pawnshops.
