    if you did not complete your contract, you would not be owed the $3000. You specifically state you returned unfinished cases to them so why would you be owed for work not completed?

    It sounds like you need to determine the value of the work you are actually owed for and make a claim for that. You have to realize that some work you refused to complete but had started may have no value at all if some other lab cannot complete, or will not complete, what you started.

    The $3000 was for finished work. The cases we returned were for the next month.

    then it's up to you. If this is worth litigating, the go for it. If you feel it is more trouble than it's worth, then drop it. Only you can make that determination.

    as to involving a collection agency; do you believe they can do something you cannot? Anything they do will cost money so you have to factor that in as well.

    You need to take the dentist to small claims court.
