Default Can a Landlord File Criminal Charges Over Damages

My question involves a security deposit in the State of: New Jersey regarding a summer vacation rental property. My son and his friends rented a summer apartment and the landlord is now threatening a criminal complaint that will carry felony charges. He claims there were damages above and beyond the deposit amount. Is that legal/possible since this is a landlord/tenant issue?

If your son and his friends deliberately trashed a rental property, criminal charges aren't outside the realm of possibility. We have no way to investigate what happened.
