Your wife should consult a criminal defense lawyer who is familiar with immigration issues, and try to arrange a resolution of the charge with the least potential impact on her immigration status. Often a shoplifting conviction would be treated as falling under the petty offense exception, but theft offenses are crimes of moral turpitude and any criminal act can have an impact on somebody's immigration status.
