My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Michigan
My parents are suing me, yes my parents, for money they loaned me back in '06. I verbally agreed to re-pay them based on my job at the time, now I've lost my job and now collect SSI Disability Insurance. I've tried to contact them to settle this to re-pay them back gradually, but we've been feuding for some time and we've been ignoring each other until they filed a civil suit against me. What are the ramifications if I decide to avoid this suit and not show for the court date, can charges outside a civil suit be filed? Will my SSI be garnished? I know verbal agreements are binding, but tough to prove in court because of selective memory and the he said she said scenario, but I plan on to pay them back and quite shocked that they went this route before talking with me, which they haven't. Thank you.
