Default Being Sued for Remainder of Unpaid Medical Bills from Years Ago

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Maryland

    Hello,
I am being sued by GBMC hospital in Baltimore...I am a one income family and start out each month barely making it for a family of 4. Since I decided to be a stay at home mom I do not qualify for disability after I had a stroke and heart attach. Now I have incurred debt after whatever my insurance did not cover. My problem is the hospital is suing me and I have nothing but my husbands work ck. each week. If they were to garnish his wages we would be on the street within months. Is there anyway I can get help. Even if they say pay it back I have nothing....Hell my car is older then my oldest child. Can anyone give me any advise on where to go or what to do.

    Thanks,
    suzybell

Typically hospitals will take payment arrangements as low as 20 dollars a month.

how long have you not paid the debt?
did you try and work out a payment arrangement?

did you actually give the hospital your social security number?, that is a no-no.

You need to answer Juniper's questions as it could affect your defense in court.

How long has it been since you incurred the debt?

How long has it been since you paid on the debt?

Have you made any written/verbal agreements to pay the debt since stopping payment?

No I have not paid on the bills. As I had said above there is no way I can pay what is left over after insurance pays. The most would be about $10 a month and they want at least $50. I do not qualify for any assistance because we are considered not poor. Yet for a family of 4 we live off of less than $55000 a year. I have no credit cards and everything and anything we buy is with cash. We drive cars that are 20 years old. But most of all we do not live beyond our means. Because of having such bad luck with my health I am in the hospital at least once a year which puts this extra strain on our finances! Point being now I am being sued!!!!

What you might need to do is separate your finances from your husband's - otherwise, once judgment is obtained, they can levy any joint bank account and joint assets to satisfy the debt.

Okay, let me try asking one of the questions more clearly.

The debt that you are being sued for, when did you incur it? How many years/months ago?

It was in 2008. I had been in and out hospital..They were to eat a day of service because my insurance company first denied the claims and the hospital did not tell me that the insurance company would not pay. I told the hospital that I would not have stayed had I know that it was not covered. I went round and round with the insurance company and the hospital to no avail. So here we are almost 4 years later being sued.
