You can start off by getting consultations with Criminal Defense Lawyers. Most offer a free consultation. And you can discuss fees then. $1500-$2500 seems a good rate. (Did we mention shoplifting is expensive?)

A public defender will still cost $200+. While equally trained, they have less time to dedicate to your case than a private lawyer.
Ahh, I understand. I think, I have no choice but to get a Public Defender. Do I have to pay on the spot? And also, by reading my case, do you think I will most likely just get a slap on the wrist? (And also of course pay a fine.)

I don't know when they bill you.

You can expect court costs and fines. The Civil Demand letter from the store. A criminal record that will haunt you for many years.

Thanks a bunch, you've been really helpful. I'm glad I registered to this site.
And I will try to be prepared for all of the above(sigh). Any tips before I enter the courtroom?

We have some stickied threads at the top that tell you what to expect. (Lindsay Lohan obviously never read them....)

I don't know if all the courts run the same. For mine (yes, I am a reformed shoplifter, it was almost 2 years ago).
    - Enter the court. You can expect to go through metal detector, put purse through another scanner, kinda like at an airport.
    - Find out where you go to check in.
    - They will direct you where to sit while waiting, or you might be directed into the courtroom.

You might want to go there sometime before your case, and watch and observe.
