Default Can I Represent My Wife in Court

My question involves court procedures for the state of: Illinois

We have been summoned to court for a divorce decree dept that occured 18 years ago. If I go with my wife, will I be allowed to speak? There are many key points that I want the judge to hear and I think I'm a little better at getting them across then she is. I want to make sure all the bases are covered and the judge hears our side correctly.

Her ex has an attorney ( for the small amount of money involved it not smart for us to obtain one). We do not. Can I represent her (whatever the legal term is called) for me to do the talking?

Unless you are a licensed lawyer with privileges to practice in Illinois, no. The only thing you can do is write down clearly what she needs to say and let her say it. The only problem with this approach is if the other side or the judge has questions/comments regarding what she says, she cannot turn to you for advice.

If you have personal knowledge, she could call you as a witness and ask you questions.

However, you can not appear to represent her in any way.
