My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan
Earlier this week I had an incident at work where I was caught with a very small amount of narcotics. Had a meeting with management immidiatley after being caught and they fired me as well as called the police on me.
The police officer showed up patted me down searched/confiscated the small amount I had on me and then asked for my drivers license, which he then used to give out my name over his radio, which Im assuming was just to check if I had a previous record or warrants or something.
After that he just told me he wasn't going to arrest me but I would be charged. I think he told me I would need to call the courthouse and then he left without giving me any sort of ticket or paperwork. The whole thing with the police lasted only 2 minutes, he was pretty much in and out and I went on my way.
My question is, can you be charged with a crime without recieving any sort of citation or paperwork on the scene? I have never been in trouble with the law at all except for 1 traffic ticket a couple years ago for expired tabs, but I thought they had to write you up a ticket or something on the scene saying you need to appear in court or atleast some form of paperwork.
I've seen a lot of people on Cops that get caught with a small amount of marijuana or something and rather than arrest them and take them to jail they just issue a ticket telling the person what they are being charged with and saying when they need to appear in court. So I was a little confused that I didn't recieve any paperwork from the officer.
