Understand that him screaming in broad daylight (or in the middle of the night for that matter) is not a valid defense to an assault charge... Nor is it a valid cause for a physical altercation.

If the DA will eventually decide not to file charges (because it is a weak case) there is nothing that this person can do to force the DA to charge you criminally. He can file a civil suit in court for return of his property, or for medical expenses accrued as a result of any injuries (though it doesn't sound that it was that serious), but when it comes to criminal charges, only the DA can make that decision!
