Default Am I a Good Candidate for Emancipation

Im 16 living with my mom (she's in debt, has a history of drug problems including meth, verbally abusive, and sometimes physically abusive) and wanting to get emancipated, so that i can finish my education and get my life in the right direction. i have evidence of being able to be independant (lived with Dad for 6 months, lived with friend for over a year, and my ant for 4 months), all with little to no help from any adults. i dont have a good transcript due to constant moving and relocating (due to my mom), but when im attending school i have a high gpa (currently 3.7). I have a lot of working experience thats under the table because i was too young to get actual pay checks, but no job yet due to my most recent move to oregon. my mom is going through another alcohal/drug relapse and yet again im unable to go to school (20 minute commute, my mom is my only ride to school and for the past 4 days shes been getting home around 1 am, wasted, causing a drunk rampage or dramatic drunk scene). this isnt the first time she's relapsed, but this time i want to get emancipated so that her problems no longer affect me, and my school. My question is.. what are my chances, according to the state of Oregon, of actually getting emancipated, and if so, what steps do i need to take first to getting that done a.s.a.p. Plus any input or advice BEFORE i get into this shindig would be awesome. Thanks!

    Allan -

Even if emancipation isn't an option for you, it sounds like your situation and reasons for seeking emancipation are for much more mature reasons than most who ask the same question on these boards; so it would be remiss of us to not try to help provide ALTERNATE guidance or assistance in attaining your scholastic goals. It sounds like, if given the chance and some stability, your academic career is a promising one.

If the current issue with school is not being ABLE to attend, then for your own sake, I hope you'll contact your school's academic guidance department or your county's School Board and make them aware of the issue. You never know what assistance they may be able to provide; anything from trying to get a bus route worked out, to transportation passes that may allow you to take public transportation, or even the possibility to take classes online (many high schools are now embracing this idea, and many will allow you to take high school courses with some college credit online through your local community colleges or to complete a GED online as a stepping stone to entrance to community college or 4 year colleges). If you absolutely run into a roadblock, contact your closest community college's academic advising department and run your situation by them for some input (I took online courses through Clackamas CC for a crime analyst certification, and found their staff to be extremely helpful.)

Only other thing I can suggest, and you would really have to think about this....would be calling your local Dept of Human Services, Child Protective Services yourself. Understand you would NOT be emancipated, but likely placed into foster care until you are 18/have completed high school.

In order to be emancipated, you have to be able to work, pay your own bills 100%, and maintain good grades. And no living with others, it has to be all on your own.

As Aardvarc said, you have very mature reasoning. Good luck to you.
