My question involves criminal law for the state of: North Carolina-My partner died unexpectantly after making it for 9 years in Fed. pen..His health was good when he began his time. Several yrs. later he was diagnosed with Hep.C,& diabetes was soon to follow.Within a short time later he was diagnosed with End Stage Liver Disease and also told that he had 70% renal failure after only a few yrs. of insulin treatment. He developed hepatic encephalopathy twice in which he was severely confused and unconscious or comatose for a day. His Dr. suggested that he put in a request for a compassinate release, which woud've knocked 1 yr. off sentence. Was turned down. Had to rely on a wheelchair as health declined. Was told to apply for early release again,& denied any compassion as usual. So he remained at the minimum security camp where he was to remain until Dec.where he was going to be under house arrest for 6 mos.with my supervision& ankle monitor. But his friends found him laying in the floor by his bed, unconscious. He'd been going to sick call all week, where he was passed from one nurse to a P.A. but wasn't admitted to their hospital. When they finally got him there,he laid there in & out of consciousness before they tansferred him to the local county hospital. He was too far gone evidently, for that hospital to help him. -Shouldn't a family member be informed that their loved one is obviously not going to survive.Don't inmates & their families have any rights to visitation at a time like that? They just called at midnight to inform his sons that their Dad was dead and they didn't know anything about it,only a phone number to call the next day for any questions. They didn't even get that part right,as he wanted his wife to be first on a call list for emergency. We live in Va. and used to visit him Frequently. I didn't think that dieing alone was included in the sentencing for a drug charge. No one at Butner Fed.Prison has ever told us one single thing about his death. An office worker told me that I was entitled to 240 pages of free medical records under the Freedom of Information Act.I got them, but it felt like a kick in the gut.He died in June last year annd I still find myself expecting him to come home.Sorry to ramble on so. Just wonder if everyone is kept in the dark about loved ones impending or apparent demise. Does civil rights enter this picture at all?(Just an afterthought) Thank you so much for you time.![]()
