My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Michigan

So my friend and I were at Walmart, where I thought it would be a good idea to steal some makeup. When we tried to leave to LPO's told us to follow them, and we did. We cooperated fully and were nice. They told me to remove the merchandise from my person, and I promptly did. They then had us fill out an identification type of paper. (Eyecolor, weight, ect.) They then told me that I would have a $200 fine, and he would have $50. His mom then came up and they released us to her. They said that there should be something coming in the mail in 4-6 weeks and if we fail to pay it we will have warrants out for our arrest. So should I not pay this and wait for it to go to court, or what? Were they in their rights to release me to someone who is not my guardian/parent? We are both 16.
