    Unhappy Petty Theft Charges

I am 18 and was caught shoplifting 50 dollars worth of stuff from Sephora in NY. I am so scared! I was detained and they took my fingerprints and pictures. i have to go to court on July 24 and my arresting officer told me i don't need an attorney but one will be present at the court. What kind of consequences am i facing? Will it stay on my permanent record or can i get it expunged? Thanks so much for ANY HELP or ADVICE!!!

Talk to a local lawyer about sentencing alternatives which may allow you to avoid a conviction. It's my understanding that New York may issue certificates of good conduct or of rehabilitation for people previously convicted of offenses, but that the state does not otherwise expunge or seal criminal records.

For a first shoplifting offense, offenders usually face probation, fines, and possibly a community service requirement.
