My question involves a roommate in the State of: Georgia.
I have been living in my apartment for awhile. In our apartment we have separate rooms and separate inclusive rent for each respectable person but with one other roommate you share a bathroom. (4 bd 2 bth) So far I have one roommate that I know pretty well, he and I both left for the winter break at about the same time 4 hours away. (These are 'college apartments') Another one of my roommates I had previous conflict with, who I also shared my bathroom with, she was due to be evicted in the next week after our departure. Before we left though, there was a new roommate who recently moved into the fourth room, which whom I didn't know too well. But he is friends with an acquaintance I had only heard of but not really knew, who has an already bad record of drugs, gangs, and apartment break ins and the what not. Apparently the acquaintance was in a recent need of a place to stay, and had been staying with neighbors for sometime. So, when he heard that I was leaving and my roommate was being evicted, he and the new roommate had the nerve to ask me if I would a) leave my door unlocked for him to stay, or b) break through our bathroom and unlock my soon-to-be-evicted roommate's door for him to stay in. Needless to say I declined, for even entry into the other roommate's room would eventually lead to entry into mine through the bathroom door...
So I leave, have been gone for a month (and still gone). My roommate who shared my bathroom was evicted a week later as well. So, I had my friend to go by and just check my apartment (I was more so worried that the one who was evicted would probably trash my apartment out of spite) but no. Little did I know that was the last of my worries. My friend had went into my apartment to find that the other roommate's friend had been living in my room. He wasn't literally there at the time, but he had his underwear on the floor, a game system hooked up to my tv, (which was left on and so were the lights), his clothes were everywhere, the bed left a mess- basically it was as if he had made it his new home.
So, I called the office to have them change the locks and lock up both me and the other roommate's door, which they promised they would get to in the next hour (at least the locking up part) and this was on Friday ( Jan 14). my calls were not returned, when i called Monday (Jan 17) they basically said they never made a case about it, but they would get right to locking up the place again (so i have no idea if the lady actually locked up Friday or not). then Tuesday i call, once again no one knows what I'm talking about, but at least i was able to talk to an actual MANAGER this time since all the important people were gone for the holidays. at first they didn't want to do anything, told me that the only thing they could do was change the locks- but I made a big deal about it and now they're "looking into it" and will return my calls tomorrow (wed Jan 19).
but i KNOW there has to be a way to punish them. maybe the guy literally staying there can be really touched, but at least my roommate should be evicted or something??? It doesn't make sense that it's against our lease to have people living in your same room with you, but if you have someone living in your ROOMMATE'S room for a damn month and then some, there are no consequences but a warning and changing the locks.. Please help?? I haven't been able to return to my apartment yet due to transportation, but who knows if this guy has done more than just live in my room. He could have possibly stole stuff and even got into the private information that I have stored into my room (such as bank information) and it's seriously unnerving that nothing is going to happen in regards of punishment. Apparently when the manager actually went into it to look through my room, all the guy's stuff is mysteriously gone, so how did he get back into my apartment after they had locked up both doors? (That's if they went and locked up the rooms as they had promised) Also, I would like to add that our bathroom locks pretty much suck. It takes nothing but an ID card and a twisting of the knob to get in, and I thought it was the duty of the apartment to check behind and lock up rooms after people leave?? Even if my roommate had left her door open after she left, shouldn't the apartment be responsible to go back and lock up things to make sure no one is allowed to enter??
