My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of California: I have paid my landlord on time and they refused to accept rent when it is due. My understanding is that this is illegal according to the Los Angeles County Consumer Affairs Division and it may also violate State or FDIC Banking Laws because there is a clearly, imprinted expiration date on the checks but no one was able to state the applicable laws or codes. The landlord is now stating that they may serve me with an eviction notice because of non-payment of rent when in fact I paid on-time and it is documented. Can a landlord do this?
