Default Can Our Child Take Mother's Last Name for Practical Reasons

We are happily married, expecting our first child. My husband's last name is very long (14letters) and difficult. Mine is much more simple. Is it OK to give the child my last name for practical reasons?
My husband is concerned that the child might feel bad having mother's last name - like if she had no father.
How common is it to have mother's last name?
    Thanks!

Yes, it's ok to give your child your last name.

Can't answer how common it is.
