Default Caught Shoplifting at Target, No Police or Papers

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

So I was caught shoplifting by and undercover LP Officer at Target. Needless to say I was scared out of my mind. He told me to remove all merchandise that I stole and then told me he knows I was stealing. Then he asked me what I was doing. At this point I knew that I really messed up. I told him I just made a huge mistake. He asked me how old I was and I panicked and told him 17. I forgot I was 18.. Then he started telling me that doing this kind of stuff would mess up my life and such. He asked for a School I.D and I gave him my Driver's License and he took a picture of it and gave it back. He then told me that he wouldn't call the cops, and that this was just between him and me. He just said to never come back to this store or he WILL call the cops and told me to leave and followed me out. He seemed really nice and sincere and just tried to show me the errors of my ways. I'm just scared now that I will get something in the mail. Does it seem like this is likely or did I get off with a warning and ban?? I'm also just scared that he might think I deliberately lied about my age but I was just so scared.

Ok so I was pretty shaky when I wrote this but for anyone needing a more organized summary: I was caught stealing, Undercover LP Officer asked me to give stuff back, Gave me a lecture, asked for I.D to snap a quick photo with his and phone and return but I ended up giving him my driver's license, told me to never come back to this store, ALL OF THIS done in the aisle where he caught me. I thought I would get taken to some room... I actually requested a room to not make a scene, but he said it's not going to be a scene and told me to calm down. NO police were involved and I didn't sign anything. He then followed me out. My question is what is going to happen? Will I get a civil demand notice? Or have I just earned a very lucky and free lesson I will never forget. This guy seemed really nice and understanding. I was scared shitless.

Unless Target has recently changed their policy greatly, that was WAAAAAAYYYY outside Target's normal practice for apprehensions. Did the person show you a Target issued ID? May have been a scam to get your DL or maybe just a regular citizen pissed off about having to pay higher prices because people like you steal.

How much do you think, ballpark, the merchandise you had concealed was worth?

I agree with free9man - what you described in no way, shape or form even begins to comply with Target's LP policy. And I'm familiar with their current policy.

Yea my case seemed to be the different one out of all the ones I read. I didn't see any I.D from him and he was dressed civilian. He said he just wanted to talk to me at first and then showed me the packaging I ditched... they were just some trading cards. He told me he was undercover. Probably worth around 30. I don't think he was trying to scam me because he asked for a school I.D but I gave him my driver's license in panic.

My simple question is: Will anything happen to me in terms of reparations or punishment?

Most likely there will be no further contact. Why? Cause if, and it's a big IF since he didn't produce ID, he actually was Target AP then he was cowboying outside of regs. He might write it up in their computer system as having recovered the merchandise, embellishing by saying he got you to dump the merchandise rather than mentioning he confronted you. With that, he shouldn't enter any personally identifiable information on you. The less this gets questioned, if documented, the better for HIM.

I never did this but I saw good, hard workers flush their jobs down the toilet for doing stupid stuff like this.

I'm sorry that this had to be the situation. I feel sick to my stomach knowing that my stupidity combined with someone's good actions could get them into trouble. I know I seem like scum. I thanked this guy so much for catching me. I repeatedly thanked him for catching me and showing me how foolish this all was. I even thought about going back to pay for the goods but I can't go back due to the ban. I just hope nothing befalls this person.

If anything happens to him, it's his fault for breaking SOP. You learned your lesson, which is good. It may be that he will have to learn a lesson as well. Most likely, unless he's already on probation for something else, this would only earn him a warning and maybe some refresher training.
