Default Defaulted on Federal Student Loan and Living Abroad

I got notified by phone few days ago by a collection agency that I have a defaulted student loan with amount of $40K; however I graduated from college in Boston in 1994, and no one had ever contacted me before on that issue on defaulting on a loan.
I know that I took a student loan worth of about $14K in order to graduate and paid off $2K only, and then due to family reasons I left the states and now living in a EU country (native country).

My questions: 1- Am I at risk to be sued by the collection agency at my native country? since I do not own anything or ahve any assets in the states.
2- Do collections agencies known to sue defaulters on such due amount?

Please help me with your answers.
