Boats work similar to vessels in most states. It is NOT just a "finders keepers" situation. SOMEONE owns that vessel, even if it appears abandoned. It may be the registered owner, or it may be the insurance company who paid a claim on the vessel. Until and unless you hold the title to the vessel in your name, you will not be able to register it and could be facing issues for being in possession of stolen property. In order to GET the title, your state's marine law enforcement needs to both inspect the vessel and attempt to identify and locate the actual owner. If such owner cannot be identified or located THEN you may be able to take title to the vessel. You can contact the TPWD at (800) 792-1112 to get more info.
