Default Can I Become a Police Officer with a Criminal Record

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Hampshire.

I was convicted of Neglect of duty by a public officer and attempted Neglect of duty in 1988. I was employed as a full-time correctional officer in Vermont and a part-time police officer in two towns.
I know live in New Hampshire. It was many years ago and these are misdemenor charges. I was very young and involved with the wrong woman.
I recently passed a physical fitness test but failed the oral board interview for a part-time police officer job. I was up front and explained the incident to the panel at the begining. I wanted to explain my state of mind at the time and show that I am a very changed person.
What are my chances of getting back into police work with this in my past?

Some crimes a police force might excuse, but criminal charges stemming from a law enforcement type role are probably going to be disqualifying for most forces.
This is exactly the thing they are looking to find and weed out when they do the background check.

If I were able to receive a Pardon from the Governor, would that increase my chances?

Probably not, as long as there are candidates who haven't already proven themselves untrustworthy in a LEO row.

A conviction for "neglect of duty" (whatever that is) while working as an LEO is likely to make any future law enforcement job nearly impossible. The only thing going for you is the 22 year gap between then and now. You might be able to show that you are a changed man and that was not you back then. However, that conviction will dog you in any future dealings. If you were to be hired, your effectiveness could be compromised because any defense attorney and the world can bring this up against you to try and taint your credibility.

While a pardon might remove the official stigma, the prospective employing agency will want to learn about it and can still use the circumstances of the incident to support a decision not to hire.

You might continue to try, but you might want to feel out the prospective employer early on to find out what they think about it. Highlight your achievements - personal and professional - that show you are not the same "kid" you once were.

You would have to first become a cop and then commit a crime .. then you could be a cop with a criminal record.
