I work in a nursing home in the state of Texas. I've been employed their for 2 1/2 years. I started out working Monday-Fridays, morning shift and after about 7 months, switched to the weekend shift doing doubles, due to staffing problems. I recently went on vacation. An employee who had only worked their for two months was subbing for me. She asked my Supervisor why I went from Monday-Friday's to the weekend shift. When I heard what my Supervisor had told her, I was horrified. She told her that I went to weekends because, I was always drunk, and if I worked on the weekends, then I wouldn't drink as much.
I am a recovering alcoholic and have 12 years sobriety. My Supervisor knows this as do most of the people I work with. I take my sobriety very seriously and can't believe my Supervisor would say such a horrible statement. The employee that was subbing for me, told another employee in my department what my Supervisor had said. She, in return, told me about it.
Wouldn't this be considered Defamation of Character? Couldn't my Supervisor be fired for that? I always thought my Supervisor and I had a good relationship. This really hurt me.
