My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: North Carolina and/or Alabama.
I am a 17 year old male, and I currently live in north Carolina. I am graduating from high school in January, and have been accepted to the University of South Alabama for the spring semester. I was wondering about the circumstances that would be surrounding emancipation, if I were to take that road. My birthday is in September, so I'd be doing spring and summer semester while 17. I will not be living on campus, I will be living in an apartment with my 19 year old friend, who will also be attending the University. I do not currently have a job; however, when my mother died in 2005, I was left a large amount of money that I would gain access to whenever I began college. It is about 300 thousand dollars. I do intend to get a job in January, despite this. I am talking to my aunt and uncle about this. I am not some brat who doesn't like the rules his parents have laid down for him. I am an upstanding member of the community, and I receive only the occasional B. I am also an athlete. I know what emancipation will entail; but I believe that it will make many things MUCH easier for me and my aunt and uncle. Would someone advise me on this matter? I do not want to be emancipated now, but when I start college in January and will have access to the trust fund and most likely a job. Thank you very much.
