Default 90-Day Grace Period After Expiration of J1

I am a full-time student and Irish citizen who lived and worked in the US for three months this summer with a J1 visa.

I intend to travel to the US in the summer of 2011 to work again. An acquaintance has informed me that it will be legal for me to work in the US for a period of 90 days as a result of my having had a J1 visa this year. Is this correct, or will applying for another J1 be necessary? The visa expired on the 30th of September 2010 and I intend to travel to the US on approximately the 1st of June 2011.

The grace period is thirty days, not ninety, you cannot work during your grace period, and if you leave the country during your grace period you cannot reenter on the J1.
