    Default Georgia Medical Bill

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Georgia

I have an outstanding medical bill of several years, which I am currently paying. On November 15th 2010, I paid the agreed upon payment directly to the hospital and have the receipt. A few days prior I received from the company which does the hospitals billing a final notice, that I must pay the amount in full before ten days or go to a collection agency. I was not behind in payments, so I ignored it and paid as usual. I'm under the impression that as long as I'm not behind and they take my money, they can't send me to collections, is this a correct assumption. We are struggling financially and paying the most we can per month, if I could pay it off I certainly would. I would appreciate any advice.

No, that is not a correct assumption.

They can still send an overdue bill to collections even if you're paying as per a repayment plan.

Many creditors will not do that, though.

What happened when you called to ask them about it?

I have not talked to the medical billing company, my husband did. They wanted us to make a higher monthly payment, but my husband refused. I left a message at the hospital for the person who I made the payment arrangement with, but did not get a call back last week. I suppose I'll have to try again on Monday the 22nd.

The fact that I pay and can still get turned over to collections doesn't give me much incentive to pay, does it... I would never not pay my bill, I can better understand why some people give up trying though.

Thanks so much for the information !
