Default How Much Does It Cost and How Long Will It Take Me to Become Emancipated

My question involves emancipation laws for the State of Michigan.
Hi my name is Melanie I am 17 years old and wish to become emancipated. I will be 18 in 9 months and plan on going to Kendal Art and Design College. I will be getting a job in the next week and I plan on living with my aunt. My parents are very controling and will not let me make any decisions in my life that are necessary. They will not let me apply to any secular colleges, and they want to send me to an all girls school. How much will this process cost and how long will it take and what tips would you have for becoming emancipated?
    Sincerly Melanie

If you are talking about becoming emancipated for the purpose of moving out before you are 18, it will not happen. You haven't indicated your state, but you need to keep in mind two things; 1.) Not all states will emancipate a minor in the first place, and 2.) In those states that do, "my parents are too controlling" is not a valid reason for emancipation. Nor does living with your aunt (and, by extension, having her support you) qualify you as self-sufficient, which is mandatory for emancipation purposes. Assuming that your unnamed state allows it in the first place.

If you are talking about being "emancipated" for financial aid purposes AFTER you turn 18, that is something you will need to discuss with the financial aid office of Kendal.

Finally, you were instructed to read the stickies. If you had done so, you would have learned most of this already, if not all of it. The inability to follow directions does not bode well for the level of maturity needed for a judge to consider you ready for emancipation, EVEN IF your state allows it and EVEN IF you meet the other qualifications. Remember that emancipation is not a right; it is a privilege.
