My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Illinois(Chicago)
I recently checked our storage unit in the basement of our building and all of our items were gone and had been replaced. Apparently, they gave new tenants the same key and storage unit as ours, and these tenants thought the items were left behind by the previous tenant. Approximate value of our items lost is ~3000 dollars.
After contacting our building manager, the company said that we should just make a claim via renters insurance, and they would cut half a months rent($700). I stated that this was unacceptable, given the value of our items, and due to the gross negligence of them giving a key to our storage unit to someone else.
I was just wondering if I should consider legal counsel in this matter, as the company appears to not want to properly compensate us for the items they disposed of.
Thank you.
